Badrinath Dham is situated in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, a North Indian state. It is considered as one of the holiest place among all. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Some interesting facts are…….

  1. PART OF CHAR DHAM :- Badrinath is the only place which is a part of both Char Dham ( includes Jagannath Puri, Dwarka, Rameshwaram, Badrinath ) as well as Chota Char Dham ( Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath ).
  2. ONE OF 108 DIVYA DESHAMS :- According to Tamil scriptures, there are 108 famous Vishnu Temples present (105 in India), Badrinath is one of them.
  3. 2nd VAIKUNTH OUT OF 8 :- Vaikuntha is known as the abode of Lord Vishnu. Badrinath is considered as the second Vaikuntha after Kshir Sagar.
  4. REMAINS CLOSED FOR SIX MONTHS :- The temple remains closed for six months during winter due to extreme weather conditions. Excessive Snowfall and adverse weather make it impossible to reach the site. It closes after Diwali ( in November ) and opens at time of Akshay Tritiya ( end of April ).
  5. THE TERM 'BADRI' :- The term Badri refers to the Indian Jojoba tree or Berry tree. According to ancient scriptures, once Lord Vishnu was meditating in hills. His wife Devi Lakshmi became a Berry tree to give Him Shelter and to protect Him from the harsh weather. The tree was big, so it was named as Badri Bishal. These trees are abundant in the region. Hence the place got it's name.
  6. BUDDHISM IN BADRINATH :- During King Ashoka's rule in India, it was a Buddhist Pilgrimage place. But Adi Shankaracharya converted it into a Hindu Pilgrimage.
  7. CONCH / SHANKH IS PROHIBITED :- It is said that Conch is one of the favourite instrument of Lord Vishnu. But, in Badrinath Conch or SHANKH is prohibited inside the main temple.
  8. BADRINATH AKHAND JYOTI :- The temple remains closed for 6 months during winter season. During this time period no devotees are allowed to visit Badrinath. The main deity is relocated to Joshimath for darshan. During this off time when the doors are shut, an internal flame burning for six months from closing to reopening the gates
  9. RAWALS OF BADRINATH :- The main priest of Badrinath is also known as RAWAL. It is very important that the RAWAL belongs from the clan of Adi Shankaracharya.
  10. LORD SHIVA'S GIFT TO LORD VISHNU :- It is believed that this place belongs to Lord Shiva. But Lord Vishnu asked Lord Shiva for this place and Lord Shiva gifted Him.
  11. NARA AND NARAYANA :- The two mountain peaks near Badrinath named as NARA and NARAYANA are considered as two incarnations of Lord Vishnu. In Dwapar Yug NARA took birth as ARJUN and NARAYANA took birth as KRISHNA.
